Banyoles is in the far northeast of Catalonia and the capital of the Pla de l’Estany. It is halfway between the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees, forming a triangle of extremely interesting historical and scenic towns and places. The Estany de Banyoles and its basin are the largest karstic complex – formed by the erosive action of water – on the Iberian Peninsula and the town’s main distinctive feature.
