The Region

Features of the region

Did you know wild ducks fly together in a V-shape to reduce drag? They use the synergy principle explaining the union of forces allowing for better individual and collective results.

The new Pla de l’Estany tourist portal is also the result of public and private tourist agents in the region combining forces.

In the Pla de l'Estany, 2 + 2 = 5. Together we are looking out for the top effectiveness in achieving our common goal: providing quality service to visitors and tourists coming to the Pla de l’Estany.

Now there’s A LOT MORE to the Pla de l'Estany. Discover it for yourself!

The region of the Pla de l’Estany was created in 1988 and comprises eleven municipalities. For historical, economic and demographic reasons, the capital is Banyoles.

The region’s economy has had a farming base thanks, in part, to the abundance of water and soil quality. Livestock breeding, specialising in veal, pork and poultry is a good complement.  Industry is still based around Banyoles and extends along the main roads to Gerona and Olot and the municipalities of Porqueres, Cornellà del Terri, Palol de Revardit and Serinyà.

Nature

We are surrounded by one of the most privileged and diverse natural setting in the country. Its uniqueness is clearly linked to water. The lake system formed by a group of small pools dominated by the Estany de Banyoles is the distinctive feature.

The Pla de l’Estany natural setting also stands out thanks to the rich diversity of flora and fauna. There is a large variety of birds, especially around the lake, where over a hundred different species hibernate annually (kingfishers, northern shovelers, several types of seagulls, birds of prey, etc.). The Clot d’Espolla, one of the small pools, is home to a unique primitive crustacean: triops cancriformis. With regards to vegetation, pine trees and holm oaks predominate although there are also willow, alder, ash and black poplar trees.

Cultural Heritage

The passage of time in the region has left behind an impressive historical and cultural legacy. The Prehistoric Caves Park of Serinyà, La Draga Neolithic Park (in Banyoles) and the Vilauba Roman Villa (in Camós) are major archaeological settlements helping you to see how life really was amongst the first settlers in the area.

The Romanesque presence should not be overlooked, seen in almost sixty churches and chapels as well as castles, forts and masía farmhouses housing great architectural and historical value. They can be found in all eleven municipalities in the region.

Fairs, Festivals and Cuisine

The region is home to a wide variety of dynamic fairs, festivals and events based around food. The series of traditional and modern celebrations bring you closer to the festive reality in the Pla de l'Estany throughout the year. Stand out celebrations include the Sant Martirià Fair in Banyoles, the Honey Fair in Crespià and the Ball del cornut or Cuckold Dance in Cornellà del Terri.

You may also enjoy the large selection of restaurants, savouring our quality artisan products, some considered emblematic in the region. The ‘Gastronomy’ section on the website offers more information.

Climate

The Pla de l'Estany has a typical Mediterranean climate. Although being a landlocked region, its proximity to the coast means temperatures are mild throughout the year.  During spring, days are sunny with pleasant temperatures meaning the privileged natural setting may be enjoyed. The fairly hot summers are ideal for all types of water-based activities. Autumn, on the other hand, sees temperatures easing and frequent rains. Winters are mild and dry.
