The Pla de l’Estany is located in the heart of Gerona counties, being a crossroads between the mountain and the sea, between green and blue hues. This extremely privileged geographical location makes the area a strategic spot to discover northeast Catalonia without spending too long travelling.
Bordering the north of the Pla de l’Estany is Besalú, declared a national artistic-historical heritage site thanks to its great architectural value. The Miqvé or Jewish Purification Baths, the Romanesque bridge, the church of Sant Pere, the parish of Sant Vicenç, Sant Julià, etc, are the legacy of a millenary history still able to be discovered today.

Castellfollit de la Roca:
Castellfollit is a small village with around a thousand inhabitants. It is bordered by the confluence of the Fluvià and Toronell rivers with a spectacular basalt cliff rising up in the centre. The outline of the church and hanging houses atop the cliff, bordering the precipice, has become one of the most photographed and painted images of Catalonia. There is also a marvellous natural vantage point overlooking the two river valleys.

La Garrotxa Nature Reserve (Santa Pau):
The park is the best example of a volcanic landscape on the Iberian Peninsula and one of the most important in Europe. It extends over 12,000 hectares with 40 volcanic craters, 20 cast from lava, and many other unique physical features and landscapes. In geological terms, it is an inactive but not extinct volcanic region since the last eruptions took place in relatively recent times, some 15,000 to 10,000 years ago.

The town of Olot is known for its art and splendid landscape. Highlights include the cultural offer made up of different museums, many exhibitions, concerts, theatres, cinemas, etc. Nonetheless, the Montsacopa volcano stands out in Olot, also known as San Francesc in honour of the chapel perched on the summit: a privileged vantage point with a perfectly clear and well-preserved crater whose presence is felt throughout the town.

Located in the centre of a large river plain, Figueres is the capital of the Alt Empordà and is the economic, social and cultural centre of the county. There is an extensive tourist offer although the figure of Salvador Dalí stands out. The painter – a figurehead of surrealism – was born in Figueres which now houses his museum – the most visited in Catalonia.

The Empordà Wetlands:
This is the second wetland area in Catalonia and is made up of a series of lakes and meadows located on the confluence of the Muga and Fluvià rivers. It is a privileged habitat for fauna and, especially, for water birds. Many migratory birds stop at these wetlands along their long journeys. There are different trails and routes allowing visitors to enjoy exceptionally beautiful nature spots.
